This post is from eyeonannapolis.com <p>The <a href=”https://www.umms.org/bwmc”>University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center</a> (UM BWMC) is marking two major milestones this summer: 60 years of caring for Anne Arundel County and 25 years as part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).</p>

<h2 class=”wp-block-heading”><strong>Decades of Community Care</strong></h2>

<p>Originally opened as North Arundel Hospital on July 4, 1965, UM BWMC began with four patient care areas and a three-bed emergency department. Within six months, it had treated 7,466 patients. Today, the hospital has expanded into a 310-bed facility serving nearly 18,000 inpatients and more than 264,000 outpatient visits annually.</p>

<p>“For 60 years, UM BWMC has been committed to delivering high-quality, accessible care,” said Kathy McCollum, President of UM BWMC. “We’re proud of our history and equally focused on a bright future—embracing innovation and strengthening partnerships to enhance the health of our community.”</p>

<h2 class=”wp-block-heading”><strong>25 Years with UMMS</strong></h2>

<p>The hospital joined UMMS on July 1, 2000, connecting patients in Anne Arundel County to academic medicine, advanced clinical services, and clinical trials. UMMS now provides more than 25 percent of all hospital-based care in Maryland.</p>

<p>“UM BWMC has played a pivotal role in connecting our mission to all Marylanders,” said Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, President and CEO of UMMS. “We’ve built a nationally recognized system grounded in academic excellence and community-focused care.”</p>

<h2 class=”wp-block-heading”><strong>Patient and Staff Impact</strong></h2>

<p>Christine Coursey, a Glen Burnie resident, credited the Tate Cancer Center at UM BWMC for her recovery after a lung cancer diagnosis last year. “The specialists created a treatment plan personalized just for me… I am incredibly grateful for the excellent care I’ve received so close to home,” she said.</p>

<p>UM BWMC also supports the community through workforce development, offering internships, volunteer opportunities, and career pathway programs in nursing and allied health.</p>

<p>Stephanie DiRubbo, a quality improvement manager who began working at UM BWMC as a teen, shared, “UM BWMC is not only my employer—it’s my community, and I’m proud to be part of it.”</p>
