This post is from eyeonannapolis.com
After more than three decades of dedicated service to the local recovery community, Mark Sakraida, a founding team member of Pathways Treatment Center in Annapolis, is retiring.

Sakraida joined Pathways in 1992 when the facility first opened and quickly became a cornerstone of the center’s innovative Adventure Therapy program. Over the years, his work has helped countless individuals on their path to recovery through challenge-based experiences designed to promote personal growth, trust-building, and self-reflection.

“Mark has been instrumental in shaping the Adventure Therapy program into what it is today,” said Traci Fox, a co-worker at Pathways. “His passion, creativity, and unwavering dedication have impacted not only our patients but the wider community.”

Adventure Therapy at Pathways uses activities such as ropes courses and group problem-solving challenges to help residential patients explore teamwork, resilience, and healthy risk-taking. Sakraida’s approach ensured that all patients could benefit—whether actively participating or engaging through observation and guided reflection.

Beyond Pathways’ residential program, Sakraida also expanded the initiative to include local first responders. Over the past decade, dozens of Anne Arundel County paramedic students and members of the Police Crisis Intervention Team have taken part in joint therapy sessions alongside patients. These unique collaborations fostered greater empathy and reduced stigma around substance use disorders.

As he prepares for retirement, Sakraida leaves behind a powerful legacy—one that continues to shape how substance use treatment and community engagement intersect in Anne Arundel County.
