The MD Senate just passed The Child Victims Act of 2023. If it passes the House and is signed by the governor, the Sun reports, it will provide a lookback window for survivors of child sexual abuse to sue their abusers in civil court. This bill has stalled in state senate committees for the past six years. Wes Moore says he'd sign it into law if it passes in the House and goes to the governor's desk.
The Senate’s vote comes as, any day now, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown is expected to release a nearly 500-page report on the history of sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore. The report will detail the sexual abuse of more than 600 victims, mostly children and young adults, at the hands of more than 150 priests and other members of the clergy.
