Day one of the Moore-Miller administration announced the reallocation of $69 million for paid family and medical leave program, environmental protections, and new recreational cannabis processes that are needed after this past November Marylanders voted to legalize pot. Addressing a hot political issue, the governor also released millions of dollars for abortion services. This money was allocated by the legislature last year but Governor Hogan did not release the funds, nor would he address why he would not release the funds before he left office.
The State Assembly will be addressing what's needed to tax and regulate legal marijuana during its fast-paced 90-day legislative session. Legal recreational cannabis starts in July. By then state lawmakers are expected to have put into place a process of expunging criminal records of charges related to cannabis use and possession.
The newly elected governor is expected to release his full budget in the coming days.
