Guilty: The Verdict of the Shooting Death of Michelle Cummings, USNA Plebe Mom

A jury took about 4 hours to deliberate in the case against 30-year-old Angelo Harrod and found him guilty of last year's death of USNA plebe Mom Michelle Cummings, who died after a stray bullet fired from Pleasant Street hit her as she was on the patio of a nearby hotel.

Reporters covering the verdict say that he was also found guilty of 1st and 2nd-degree assault against Atwell and Barnes., and guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit assault, and several firearms charges.

Family members of the 57-year-old murder victim asked the Annapolis community to pray for them and will be back for Harrod's sentencing.

State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess says that police plowed through this case even without the help of a community, saying,  she was disappointed that the community, in and around Pleasant Street, did not rise up against this type of gun violence.  She adds that it's possible that more charges will come from this 2021 senseless attack. "There are people who have evidence....there are people who know more out there, and we encourage them to come forward."

At a news briefing after the verdict was read, Ms. Leitess explained the guilty verdict of transferred intent-how Harrod intended to murder the couple he was shooting at but ended up hitting the Naval Academy plebe's Mom.  Other counts stem from previous criminal activities that Harrod has on his record that prohibited him from carrying the weapon he used that summer night. No motive for the shootings was discussed.

Harrod could receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is scheduled for late February, 2023
