The fate of the 31-year-old Annapolis man charged with firing the errant bullet that hit Texas Naval Academy Mom Michelle Cummings is in the hands of the jury after the defense rested earlier today.
57-year-old Michelle Cummings was the mother of Midshipman Leonard Cummings III, who was, at the time, an incoming freshman and football prospect kicking off basic midshipman training called Plebe Summer.
Investigators believe that Cummings was struck by a stray bullet on June 29, 2021, while she was on the hotel’s patio, said Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson.
Police say two people were sitting in an SUV on a nearby street when shots rang out, and Cummings was struck at least once. The defense says that prosecutors cannot prove that it was Angelo Harrod who fired the bullet, let alone that it was his gun the bullet was fired from.
The judge reportedly instructed jurors on the several charges against Harrod, including first-degree murder for the death of Cummings as well as attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy charges for the shooting of Breonna Barnes and R.J. Atwell, who were in the car the defendant was firing at. The prosecution is seeking a sentence of life in prison without parole.
