MD Board Suspends Ever Forward Cargo Ship Captain's License

The Maryland Board of Pilots voted unanimously in October to suspend the operating license of Captain Steven Germac, the state's Department of Labor said Tuesday. Germac manned the Ever Forward, a cargo ship that was stuck in the mud in the Chesapeake Bay near Sandy Point State Park for about a month this past spring. The suspension came in October but was most recently reported by the board. It's not known yet if the Captain will be appealing the suspensions.

The container ship had some of its  4,964 full boxes of cargo removed to lighten the load.  It was a slow process in order to avoid damage to the ship and decrease the prospect of fuel or oil leaking from the 1,095-foot container ship.

The cargo ship, operated by Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine Corp., was traveling from Baltimore to Norfolk, Virginia, on March 13, when it ran aground.
