MONDAY: Van Hollen, Sarbanes, Members of Working Group to Unveil Chesapeake National Recreation Area Draft Plan for Public Input and Review

It's been in the works, and proposed since the Environmental Protection Agency was in its infancy in the 1970s, and members of the Maryland delegation, following a five-year study sponsored by Senator Charles “Mac” Mathias (R-MD) to assess the significant declines in aquatic and terrestrial wildlife of the Chesapeake Bay, the first Chesapeake Bay Agreement is adopted in 1983

(A great timeline can be found here)

Members of the current delegation have invited the press to join them on Monday y, November 14, 2022, at 1:30 p.m., U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman John Sarbanes (both D-Md.) will be joined by U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), state and local officials, economic leaders, watermen, advocates for conservation, and others to announce draft legislation they’ve authored to create a unified Chesapeake National Recreation Area (CNRA). The group will also announce the opening of the public comment period on the draft text and will encourage community members to share their thoughts and input on the plan. The discussion draft legislation was developed through collaboration with the National Park Service (NPS) and the working group that Senator Van Hollen and Congressman Sarbanes convened last year and aligns with the ten guiding principles laid out in June, including the voluntary nature of participation.

The announcement will be held at the Burtis House, located at 69 Prince George's Street in Annapolis.
