Annapolis Couple Plead Guilty to Espionage - Again

The Toebbes, the Annapolis couple accused of trying to sell military secrets to a foreign country pleaded guilty for the second time. Both 43-year-old Jonathan Toebee and his 46-year-old wife Dianna appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Trumble in the Northern District of West Virginia, agreeing to longer sentences after a different judge rejected their first plea deals in August because they were too lenient and “not in the best interest” of the country. The two originally pleaded guilty this past February. Now Mr. Toebbe, is a former Naval engineer. His wife Dianna was a teacher at the Key School, whom he used as a lookout when they drove to a dropoff site with sim cards containing schematics of a nuclear submarine. He thought he was dealing with agents from another country, but it was actually an FBI operation.

Dianna faces 12 and a half years in prison. Johnathan now faces 21-plus years. The initial judge who rejected their earlier plea agreement reportedly will be the sentencing judge.
