City Council To Consider Legislation Opposing Expanding Golf at Greenbury Point

Seventh Ward Alderman Rob Savidge confirms that he will be introducing a resolution at tomorrow night's regular City Council Meeting voicing the council's opposition to developing a golf course at the Greenbury Point Conservation area.

This news first came to WNAV Radio's attention via the Save Greenbury Point Facebook page.

Savidge tells WNAV, via text message, "The Resolution was ready in late July but the introduction was delayed due to our August recess. From what I hear, Gladchuck is still planning on pursuing this project in the future. That's why I feel it's important for the City Council to speak up and get on the record as opposing this idea."

Mr. Savidge is referring to the President of the Naval Academy Golf Association Chet Gladchuck, who is in his 22nd year as President of the Naval Academy Athletic Association. Last month the Navy said it was no longer considering proposals to lease Greenbury Point.  Since that time debate has continued on whether environmental considerations and conservation can co-exist with Gladchuck's proposal to build an 18-hole course in that area. He told local media in mid-August that he is confident that he can configure a proposal that will be reassuring to conservationists and have it reviewed by the Navy Chain of Command.
