(Millersville, MD) WNAV — A local couple are victims of a familiar fraud that county police say could have cost them thousands of dollars.
The unidentified elderly couple received a phone call requesting $9000 dollars for their son’s bail money. Police arrived at their home to take the official report and a second call came in requesting more money. The second request was for $20,000. Officers were there when two subjects arrived to collect, and they were arrested.
Both men are from Silver Spring. Officials say never to accept calls from unknown parties and verify claims about family members. Sometimes, perpetrators will claim a family member has been kidnapped and seek ransom. If unknown people call you and make similar claims; hang up and notify police. The FBI is investigating similar fraud cases across the state.
