Chris Van Hollen suffered what is being described as a minor stroke. The 63-year-old was first elected to Congress in 2002. He served as the U.S. representative for Maryland’s 8th congressional district until 2016. He was sworn in as a U.S. Senator in 2017.
Van Hollen was delivering a speech at the Western Maryland Democratic Summit on Saturday when he began experiencing lightheadedness and neck pain, according to his statement. He posted on social media that he completed the speech but, after returning home, sought medical attention at the advice of a doctor and was admitted to George Washington University Hospital.
