Maryland’s current 36.1-cent tax will increase to nearly 43 cents today. The federal tax is 18 cents per gallon of regular gasoline. The increase in the tax has been the target of political parsing amongst both the Republican and Democratic gubernatorial candidates. But media reports indicate that the state legislature didn’t think that providing another gas holiday, like the one that went into effect this past April, would pass along much savings to drivers, some of who didn’t notice a price drop at service stations. At that time Governor signed the law that authorized the suspension of the tax the average price of a gallon of regular gas was $4.17. As of yesterday, Thursday, the average price of gas in the state was $4.798. Prices in Anne Arundel County, according to the AAA were at $4.76, and in Queen Anne’s was at $4.74 a gallon.
