(Annapolis, MD) WNAV — President Joe Biden fulfills a campaign promise with his nominee of an African American woman as an associate justice on the United States Supreme Court today.
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is 51 years old and would be the youngest member on the high court.
If confirmed, it is a lifetime appointment.
She would be filling the seat of Associate Justice Stephen Breyer who announced his retirement plans for this summer. He is 83 years old.
Annapolis resident and African American Caucus Leader, Carl Snowden, is among a large group of supporters applauding the president’s choice. Mr. Snowden remarked in his statement that “while Judge Brown Jackson may be the first African American woman named to the highest court, she will not be the last.”
The judge is married with two children, was born in Washington D.C., graduated from high school in Miami and attended Harvard Law School.
Her appointment comes during the month the country celebrates Black History Month.
