TRANSCRIPT:

Good morning, it is Tuesday, May 20th, 2025. This is John Frenaye and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

So, how’d she do? I had to sneak away for a long weekend and threw the DNB up to the New Yorlk Studios for a few days! To answer the dozens of emails and texts I received yesterday and will likely receive this morning, the Blue Angels appear to be having a better day today. As for the official show tomorrow, they are still planning to fly, but the weather will determine their plans. These pilots REALLY want to fly this show as it is so special to them. Lightning will ground them, as will high winds and steady, heavy rain. We are out of the woods on the first two, I think, but the rain is a question. We’ll be finding out, and as soon as we know, we’ll post it on our social media! Here’s your OMG Fact for the day. Pelicans are like our Blue Catfish here in the bay; they will eat anything, mainly fish, but also turtles, crustaceans, tadpoles, and even seagulls. Sounds like jerky birds to me! Anyhow, we have some news. So, shall we?

Annapolitans for a Better Community, a nonpartisan advocacy group, has launched a petition drive aimed at placing two measures on the November 2025 City of Annapolis ballot. The first seeks to reduce the homestead property tax credit cap from 10% to 2%, aligning the city with Anne Arundel County and potentially offering homeowners relief from rapidly increasing tax assessments. The second measure would make city primary elections more inclusive by allowing non-affiliated voters to participate. ABC emphasizes that signing the petitions is not a vote for or against the proposals, but a move to let voters decide on them directly. The group must gather 2,600 signatures for each initiative by June 30, 2025, with geographic representation from each city ward. We have the info and links at EyeOnAnnapolis.net or you can go to ABCAnnapolis.org

The Maryland Park Service has introduced the “25 in 2025 Adventure Challenge,” inviting participants to complete 25 themed challenges in state parks before November 15, 2025. Registration is optional, but those entering the prize drawing must register and donate $25. Challenges can be completed across any number of parks. Some of the cooler ones include:

Chasing Waterfalls – Visit parks with notable waterfalls.

Living on Island Time – Explore island parks.

Light the Way – Tour historic lighthouses.

Disc Golf Challenge – Play disc golf in designated parks.

The City of Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department has announced the seasonal opening of its two outdoor public pools starting Saturday, May 24, 2025. The Kenneth R. Dunn Municipal Pool at Truxtun Park and the Harbour House Pool in Eastport will both operate through late September. The Dunn Pool will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting June 13, with limited hours before that date. The Harbour House Pool will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting June 13. Special holiday hours and early closures are posted online. New this season is an Aqua Flow class joining the aquatic fitness offerings at Dunn Pool, which also include Aqua Cycle and Aqua Trampoline Tabata. Youth swim lessons for ages 3 and up are available, with class sizes limited to six children. The Dunn Pool is also available for weekend party rentals. For full information on swim programs, schedules, and rates, residents are encouraged to consult the city’s Spring/Summer 2025 Program Guide or visit the Annapolis aquatics website.

The Anne Arundel County Food Bank will benefit from the upcoming “Feeding Hope” event, scheduled for June 12, 2025, at the Naval Academy’s new Fluegel Center. The event will feature an evening of gourmet food and live entertainment. Proceeds will help the food bank continue to serve thousands of residents facing food insecurity. Tickets and sponsorship info is available at AAFoodBank.org
