TRANSCRIPT:

Good morning, it is Thursday, May 15th, 2025, and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

Yesterday wasone of those days that needed about 4 additional hours for me! Burning the midnight oil! Here’s an OMG fact for you. Women manage the money and pay the bills in approximately 75% of the US households! Not here. The only female in my house currently is my cat from the SPCA and she’s still working on her GED. Anyhow— news— let’s get into it, shall we?

Midshipman Augustus Russo of Summit, New Jersey, capped the Herndon Monument at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 2 hours, 27 minutes, and 21 seconds, marking the culmination of Plebe Year for the Class of 2028. The Herndon Monument Climb, a 21-foot, lard-covered obelisk, is a time-honored tradition symbolizing teamwork and perseverance. Russo’s time was respectable but not record-breaking; the fastest climb was 1 minute 30 seconds in 1972, and the longest dragged on for over four hours in 1998. While the legend says the midshipman who caps the monument becomes the first to make Admiral, no one has yet fulfilled that prophecy. The event officially ended with a cannon fire at 10:32 a.m., and the plebes celebrated becoming full fourth class midshipmen.

Maryland’s credit rating has been downgraded by Moody’s from AAA to Aa1, marking the first downgrade since 1973. The agency cited Maryland’s underperformance compared to other top-rated states, high fixed costs, and vulnerability to federal policy changes. The downgrade is expected to result in higher borrowing costs for the state and possibly for counties and school districts as well. Governor Wes Moore and state Democrats blamed the Trump administration for federal job losses and funding cuts that have heavily impacted Maryland, but Republicans and some analysts say years of high spending and budget mismanagement contributed significantly. Lawmakers recently closed a nearly $3 billion deficit with a mix of tax increases and spending cuts, but Moody’s warned further adjustments may be needed if federal cuts continue. It is expected that the two additional rating agencies, Standard & Poors and Fitch will follow suit!

Which brings us to my editorial yesterday. Governor Wes Moore quickly labeled it a “Trump downgrade,” pointing to recent federal job losses and agency budget cuts. However, Trump has been in office 114 days, and Moore has been in it for 847 days. How does the Governor account for the remaining 733 days? As Governor Moore tours the country and primary states professing he is not running for president, Maryland has a problem and it is time for the leadership he says he posesses. Blaming others is the easy way out, and one that the Governor seems to favor, but now it is time to own the problem and work for a solution. You can read the full editorial at EyeOnAnnapolis.net

The Anne Arundel County Office of Transportation, the City of Annapolis, and BikeAAA will host the 28th Annual Bike to Work Day on Friday at Susan Campbell Park on City Dock in Annapolis. The event runs from 7 to 9 a.m. and encourages biking as a healthy, environmentally friendly commuting option. County Executive Steuart Pittman and Mayor Gavin Buckley are among the leaders promoting the effort as part of the county’s Walk & Roll Anne Arundel master plan. The event features guest speakers, giveaways, refreshments, and bike safety checks. Attendees can also pick up event t-shirts and get real-time transit information using the Passio GO app. Bike to Work Day is part of a region-wide celebration to promote cycling and has been organized locally since 1996.

Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating, known as CRAB, will present a special waterfront concert at its Adaptive Boating Center in Annapolis on Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. The show will feature local folk duo Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante performing songs inspired by the Chesapeake Bay and its traditions. Meneely, who grew up near Spa Creek, is known for her storytelling lyrics about Bay watermen and Annapolis’s maritime heritage. Van Sante adds international experience and harmonies. Tickets are $20 in advance or $35 at the door, with proceeds supporting CRAB’s free adaptive sailing programs. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and reusable water bottles. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase, and wheelchair seating is available. This is really a perfect venue for a small concert—if you have not seen the facility—you should!
