TRANSCRIPT:

Good morning, it is Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025, and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

We need to start the week on Tuesdays—I am just SO unmotivated each Monday it seems! The idea of painting fingernails originated in China, and the color indicated someone’s social rank. Now that’s an interesting OMG Fact if I say so myself. But we have some news. So, shall we?

Anne Arundel County Police have identified the man found dead inside a burned vehicle in Davidsonville as 67-year-old Edward Stephen Koza of Annapolis. Koza was the owner of Tropic Bay Water Gardens, the business located where the fire occurred on May 24. First responders arrived around 9:25 p.m. to find a car fully engulfed in flames. Once extinguished, human remains were discovered inside. The death was later ruled a homicide, and two 18-year-olds—a male from Davidsonville, and a female from Harwood—were arrested and charged with murder and arson. Authorities confirmed the victim’s identity yesterday. The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward. WBAL-TV has some of the more lurid details from the charging documents.

A Crofton couple is on the hook for more than $665,000 after being found guilty of scamming parents with fake doula services. Heather and Ryan Delaney ran Maryland State Doulas, offering services from pregnancy support to placenta encapsulation—but in many cases, they failed to provide anything after collecting advance payments. Some clients were charged unauthorized fees, others received fake refund confirmations, and many never saw a dime returned. Testimony from 45 customers helped Maryland’s Attorney General, Anthony Brown, conclude that the Delaneys misused funds for personal expenses, including Disney vacations and golf outings. The Attorney General’s Office has banned them from accepting upfront payments unless they post a $250,000 surety bond—a requirement not typically found in your average birth plan.

Music lovers, mark your calendars: The 4th Annual Annapolis Songwriters Festival is coming to town September 11 through 14. Modeled after the Key West Songwriters Festival, this event mixes waterfront charm with live music from national headliners and rising stars. From Rams Head On Stage to hotel lobbies and open-air venues, Annapolis will transform into a walkable trail of tunes and storytelling. While some shows require tickets, most performances are free and scattered across the city’s most beloved spots. So if you like your music with a side of crab cakes, this one’s for you. Mark those dates on the calendar—tickets and lineup will be announced shortly!

Animal lovers, get ready to leash up for the 2025 Walk for the Animals at Quiet Waters Park on Sunday, June 8. Hosted by the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, this signature fundraiser helps support over 2,500 homeless animals each year. Registration kicks off at 8:00 a.m., with the scenic group walk beginning at 9. There’ll be local vendors, food trucks, face painting, live music, and adoptable animals hoping to find forever homes. And yes, you can bring your dog—just maybe skip the face paint. Annapolis Subaru of “Canines & Crosstreks” fame returns as the lead sponsor. Proceeds benefit the SPCA’s no-kill shelter and programs that connect pets with veterans.
As we start to close, today is Ticket Tuesday, and Rams Head On Stage hooked us up again for June. Going to do something different this week. I am going to list ALL of the shows for this month, and it will be your job to look them up at RamsHeadOnStage.com and let me know which one you want a pair of tickets to. Here we go… The Super 70s Concert Experience with Trans Am, Blues Music Award Winner Sue Foley, Reggae Artist Mike Love, The Nelsons, The Side Guys—the Music of David Sanborn…this is his band. A Paul McCartney Celebration, Langhorne Slim, Smooth jazz artists Patrick Lamb and Lin Rountree, Paradise Kitty, an all-girls Guns & Roses tribute, Davey Knowles & Chesapeake Sons, Orleans, and Piff the Magic Dragon. Want a pair for any of them? Get in touch, and I may hook you up!

OK, that’s a wrap, but first, a quick thank you to you for listening and sharing and letting your friends and colleagues know about us. And to our sponsors for the Daily News Brief– Annapolis Subaru, the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, Hospice of the Chesapeake, and Mac Medics.
