This post is from eyeonannapolis.com
Maryland’s casino revenue experienced a slight drop in January 2025 when compared to January 2024, totaling around 0.9% and resulting in an overall revenue of $151.8 million. This drop isn’t too much of a cause for concern for traditional casino operators, as it is still a relatively small number. However, it does show the growing competition emerging from the increasing popularity of online casino gaming, as opposed to traditional brick-and-mortar establishments.

Online casinos not only bring the world of casino gaming to the gambler’s fingertips, greatly increasing accessibility, but they also come with a wide range of advantages that the more traditional casinos simply cannot match. Many online casinos have massive game libraries, impressive bonuses for both new and seasoned players, and a variety of different payment methods that can be used on their sites. For example, some of these casinos allow for the seamless integration of cryptocurrency. Allowing gamblers to wager and withdraw funds almost instantly, as well as enjoy the many security benefits and increased anonymity that crypto payments allow (source: cryptocasino.guru).

Despite the drop in overall revenue experienced in the gambling industry, there was actually a small increase (0.8%) in the amount of funds taken from this money and contributed to the betterment of the state. One sector that received a lot of this financial aid was the Education Trust Fund. On top of the trust fund, funds from gambling since January have also gone to funding local jurisdictions and women-owned businesses across Maryland.

Out of the six privately owned casinos in Maryland, only MGM National Harbor, Hollywood Casino Perryville, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort experienced revenue growth. The others: Live! Casino and Hotel, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, and Ocean Downs all reported a drop in overall revenue taken throughout the year.

Leading the charge, MGM National Harbour increased its revenue by 2.3% and generated a total of $67.6 million in January 2025. Sporting smaller total revenues, but still commendable increases, Hollywood Casino Perryville enjoyed a revenue growth of 1.0%, generating $6.6 million, though they still have a long way to go to beat their previous annual revenue of $1.3 billion, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort saw an impressive increase of 3.8%, helping them reach $3.3 million.

On the other hand, Live! Casino and Hotel reported a 2.9% drop in revenue and were only able to make a total of $55.1 million. This result has a particular sting to it because in December, the casinos experienced a 2.4% drop in revenue. This could signal that the casino is experiencing a downward trend in popularity. Similarly, Ocean Downs Casino saw a large revenue decline of 6.4%, which led them to generate a total of $5.7 million. In December, the casinos had enjoyed a slight revenue growth of 0.8%, so this number could not have been a welcome sight to its operators. Finally, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore experienced the worst month out of all the other casinos on this list. Their revenue dropped by 7.9% to $13.4 million. This steep drop came after an even bigger one of 12.9% in December.
