The performance marks Annapolis’ first participation in Taps Across America and comes during the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Organizers hope the event becomes a new local tradition of remembrance.

Taps Across America began in 2020 as a way to honor military members lost in service, especially during a time when many Memorial Day events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the initiative has grown, with over 10,000 musicians across the country taking part each year. Participants perform Taps at exactly 3:00 p.m. local time from porches, driveways, cemeteries, and public spaces.

The tribute is aligned with the National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress in 2000, which encourages Americans to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served and died.

“It’s a simple act, but a powerful one,” said Maj. Barnes. “Sounding Taps in Annapolis this year honors not just the fallen but helps connect our community to a national moment of unity and respect.”

The public is encouraged to attend the brief ceremony at City Dock and take part in the National Moment of Remembrance.
